Now it's my turn

Well, everything that Malena said is true. I am a deep romantic. But here is my side of the story to help bring it some new light.

Proposing in mid-June was not my first option. My first option was to propose in July, but everything to make the proposal possible came at an earlier time. Malena had been begging me to tell her when I was going to propose, but I always said, "I don't know," after every month that she mentioned. She would mention months all the way up until January - then she would get really nervous because she thought I had not planned anything. Well, after I got the ring I called Malena's mom and started planning on when we could meet to talk about me marrying her daughter. We meet on Friday, June 13th, in Madisonville, TX, at a bed and breakfast where Bryan, Miss Judy, and I ate lunch. When I got home that day, the main item for the proposal was sitting on my doorstep. Once I realized what the package was, I began planning the proposal and hiding items. On Sunday the 15th, I found out that we weren't having a staff meeting on Thursday and decided in my mind, "I am going to propose on Thursday!" So, Monday I went to Borders Book Store and purchased the cook book. When I got home I embossed the cook book with the embosser and hid the items in the house.

On to Thursday...
I had asked her on Tuesday if she wanted to come over after counseling and I would cook for us. So I took a nap for two hours after skipping half of class and then went to get the food. I was getting nervous, but trying to keep my composure because I knew what I was going to do. So I fancied up the dining room and made it really sweet and personal. After we ate I told Malena that I was not feeling well, which meant that I was about to do the deed. I told her that I had something for her and went to my room where the book and the ring were kept. I came back and gave her the book, which he opened and glanced right over the embossing...at first. she then looked back and realized what it said. At that time, I got down on one knee and grabbed her hand and told her sweet things. Then I asked her to marry me and she said, "YES!" Then, I had to ask her again after she realized what had happened because she was unsure of what I said. It was sweet.

I wanted it to be memorable and something that we could hold onto. Know we have momentous as well as the memories.

The Proposal

The proposal date was Thursday, June 19. Earlier that week Charles had told me that he wanted to grill for me. Well, naturally I agreed, for I can never turn down a man-made meal. On Thursday, he called to tell me that he was going to make that night date night & since I was already dressed up for my internship, he would dress up too.

When I got to his house around 4:30 with a bag of charcoal and lighter fluid (which he had forgotten to buy when he was at the grocery store, must of had other things on his mind...) I walked in the house and Charles had the table set with a table cloth and two candles. I did suspect that he might propose, but I also knew that he wanted to plan several surprises to throw me off. So, I brushed it off and began helping him chop the vegetables (which he left for me to do because I love to chop vegetables, I don't know why but I do). When everything was grilled, the chicken, sausage, bell peppers (orange, red & green), tomatoes from our garden, green beans & red potatoes, we sat down to bless the meal and eat. It was delicious!

Then he said that he had a stomach ache (my first thought was disappointment because I wanted Jamba Juice for dessert, but being the caring girlfriend, I sympathized). He jumped up and said that he had bought me something the other day and forgot to give it to me. He went to his room and came back with a brand new cookbook from one of my favorite cooks (Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa, if you're curious). By this time, I was suspecting he was up to something because he never buys new books (our binding love is Half-Price Books) and this was a brand new cookbook. When I opened the book, he had embossed "From the Library of Charles and Malena Rikard" on the front page (which he special ordered from Williams-Sonoma). As I read it, he got down on one knee, opened the ring box and proposed. He said a bunch of stuff that I didn't hear. I just said YES after his lips stopped moving!

And that's the proposal, simple and meaningful, just the way I like it.

Perfect Proposal...

I'll give a detailed description of the proposal tomorrow, promise!

...a picture of the ring...

So yesterday, I made Malena hold her hand still while I took a picture of the ring. It was a little bright and you only get a few chances when you are using film. I tried enhancing the picture a little so you can see the ring. We are excited about everything and can't wait to get going on planing. We also went to Sublime Bakery here in Fort Worth to try out a baker. What we had was amazing so we may continue to check on this baker as our wedding cake person. Hope everyone is as excited as us and we would love to here some comments. Also, we will be sending out e-mails pretty soon to start getting everyone's addresses.
